What supplements can I give to a horse with arthritis?

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease in which the joint cartilage gradually wears away. This causes the buffer between the bones to be lost, which then rub directly against each other, become inflamed and cause pain. Osteoarthritis in horses can be recognised by a stiff gait, lameness and even a total reluctance to move. Although osteoarthritis cannot be cured, the right measures can be taken to alleviate the horses pain.
Feed is also an important factor in the treatment of horses with osteoarthritis. The addition of the nutrients glucosamine, hyaluronic acid and chondroitin sulphate nourishes the cartilage and thus prevents further wear and tear. For example, you can purchase hyaluronic acid in liquid form from Original Landmühle, but these osteoarthritis-relevant nutrients are also found in powdered mussels, which you can also find in the Kramer Equestrian online shop.
For horses with osteoarthritis, organic sulphur in the form of MSM is also relevant for supporting the joints from within.
To alleviate osteoarthritis pain, herbs such as devil's claw can also be added to the feed of horses with osteoarthritis. Devil's claw is a sesame plant from Africa that has anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. However, bear in mind that this is a medicinal plant that is not freely available in every country and can also cause irritation of the stomach lining in sensitive horses.
Willow bark is another recommended supplement for horses with osteoarthritis. Like devil's claw, it has anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. You can purchase dried willow bark from Original Landmühle and feed it to your horse either dry or as an infusion over its feed.
We have summarised further tips in our guide "6 Tips for Treating Osteoarthritis in Horses".
Kramer Equestrian offers a wide range of supplements and herbs that have a positive effect on the joints of horses with osteoarthritis. In our category Supplements for Joints, you can purchase the above-mentioned supplements and others for horses with osteoarthritis from Original Landmühle.

What supplements can help a horse with a tendon injury?

Nutrition plays a vital role in the tendon health of our horses. Strengthening the tendons from within is essential, as tendon injuries are the most common causes of lameness in horses. In addition to proper training, you can ensure sturdy tendons with collagen, glycosaminoglycans, sulphur, omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. A noteworthy complementary feed for injured tendons is powdered mussels or seaweed flour, which contain high amounts of glycosaminoglycans such as hyaluronic acid and thus provide building blocks for firm connective tissue. They are also rich in protein and can therefore support muscle building during retraining.

In our guides, we have provided tips on how to recognise and prevent tendon injuries in horses and how to treat them. We also discuss nutrition after tendon injuries in more detail in our guide "The Right Supplements for Tendon Injuries".
