Can monk's pepper be fed to horses on a long-term basis?
Monk's pepper helps balance hormones and does more than just help mares with cycles and heat. It can also help calm down stallions and geldings who are acting too stallion-like. Additionally, monk's pepper can help balance hormones in cases of hormone disorders like Equine Cushing's Disease.
However, like many supplements, monk's pepper does not have a positive effect straight away. To achieve a noticeable effect, you need to feed your horse monk's pepper for several weeks, ideally as a course of treatment lasting eight to twelve weeks, followed by a two to three-week break. Follow the manufacturer's instructions regarding dosage and feeding instructions. However, you can also feed your horse monk's pepper on a daily basis and long-term, provided you have consulted your vet beforehand. In such cases, it's best to feed a smaller amount to prevent hormonal imbalances.
You can purchase monk's pepper for horses online at Kramer Equestrian. As it is pepper, which has a pungent taste and smell, not all horses will accept it equally well. It's best to mix it into a portion of mash to ensure better feed acceptance.
Which supplement can help with chronic heat in mares?
Heat is part of every mare's normal cycle. However, while some mares experience silent heat without visible symptoms, others cannot seem to come out of heat. Mares in permanent heat can not only be unpleasant and annoying for horse owners, but can also cause unrest in the herd and a decline in the mare's performance.
If the mare is permanently in heat, her cycle is disrupted, for example by ovarian cysts, tumours or weight problems. However, social factors such as the composition of the herd, natural light and stress can also upset the hormonal balance and lead to permanent heat.
You can help mares with permanent heat to feel more calm by giving them hormone-regulating herbs:
- Hops have a calming effect and can dampen the sex drive.
- Monk's pepper regulates the cycle and balances hormonal imbalances.
- Cinnamon has anti-inflammatory and mood-lifting properties, helps regulate fat metabolism, cholesterol and insulin, and can also have a positive effect on the cycle.
- Raspberry leaves have a relaxing and strengthening effect on the mare's abdominal organs' and can thus have a pain-relieving effect in cases of cyclical discomfort
- Lemon balm has a calming and mood-balancing effect
- Verbena, also known as lemon verbena, has a calming effect on the mind
At Kramer Equestrian, you can purchase herbal liquids and herbal blends for horses that will help your mare achieve greater balance.
What can I feed young horses during their growth phase?
Foals are born fully developed and can keep up with their mothers after just a few hours - they're quick to leave the nest. Foals grow fastest in the following three to six months, reaching 83% of their adult size during this time. But rapid growth also means they need lots of nutrients and energy, which must be provided through high-quality feed. Nutrients such as calcium, phosphorus and magnesium are important for a stable skeletal structure during the growth phase. A deficiency causes bone splinters (OCD), which can cause friction, inflammation and lameness in the joints.
The trace elements selenium, manganese and iodine are also important for the health and growth of young horses.
A good all-round supply can be ensured with a vitamin and mineral supplement tailored to foals and young horses. Original Landmühle Vitamin and Mineral Supplement Junior Premium contains all the minerals necessary for the growth of young horses and is a must for feeding growing horses.
To meet the high calcium requirements of foals, young horses in growth and lactating mares, you can also purchase calcium powder from Original Landmühle in the Kramer Equestrian online shop, which contains high amounts of calcium as well as bone-relevant vitamins K, D3 and C.
However, even during pregnancy, the mare must be supplied with all the important nutrients so that she does not have to draw on her own reserves to nourish the foal growing inside her. Especially for pregnancy and foal health in the womb, you can purchase Original Landmühle supplement for broodmares to provide the mare and foal with all the important nutrients and thus ensure healthy growth of the foal.
