Dog Accessories

What basic equipment do I need for my first dog?

Whether you're welcoming a puppy or an adult dog into your life - the list of initial equipment for a dog can be extensive. After all, your four-legged friend needs food, water, exercise, toys, and plenty of care.
Naturally, healthy and appropriate dog food, along with constant access to clean drinking water, top the list. For these, you'll need a dog bowl for each, ideally sized to fit the adult dog's food portion. Opt for sturdy material and easy-to-clean surfaces. For on-the-go, consider a collapsible dog bowl.
Dogs need exercise. Therefore, every initial equipment haul should include a dog lead and a collar or a dog harness. If you choose a harness, it should fit snug to the body, should not slip, restrict the dog or hinder its movement. A suitable harness distributes pressure evenly and ensures a high level of comfort. H-harnesses or Norwegian harnesses are often used for this purpose.
Dogs are sociable creatures, yet they too require a place to retreat. Provide a dog bed or cushion that suits the size of your (fully grown) dog, offers them a chance to snuggle up, and supports their joints. Ideally, place the dog bed in a spot with minimal foot traffic so as not to disturb your dog's peace.
When it comes to grooming your dog, as with any animal, one should not overdo it. Nevertheless, it is important that you always have tick tweezers, nail clippers, ointments, and - depending on the breed - combs, brushes, and dog shampoos in stock. Regular care contributes to the general health of your dog's fur, ensuring the coat does not become matted and that you can spot ticks and wounds.
Dogs love to let off steam. Therefore, a few suitable dog toys should always be included as part of the basic equipment for your dog. Especially puppies, who love to test their teeth chewing on furniture, should have an alternative in the form of chew toys.
In winter and on long, rainy days, your dog still needs to go for a walk. To ensure your dog still has fun even in bad weather, and doesn't return home soaking wet, dog raincoats or bathrobes for drying your dog are recommended. These are particularly beneficial for elderly or ill dogs, and puppies.

Which dog toys are suitable for my dog?

In addition to plenty of exercise, dogs also need mental stimulation to keep them occupied. Various tasks can incorporate dog toys excellently. However, dogs also require certain toys to satisfy their chewing needs and potentially relieve built-up tension. Dog toys are recommended from puppyhood, as they contribute to both psychological and physical development.

  • Toys for action-packed walks: Fetch bags, frisbees, balls with or without pull ropes, ball launchers, rope toys.
  • Squeaky toys
  • Chew toys for dental health and high chewing drive: ropes, bones, teeth-cleaning dog toys.
  • Cuddly toys without sharp or hard components.
  • Intelligence toys: Particularly effective against boredom or when your dog has to be left at home alone. Depending on the toy, the dog must solve various tasks and find a treat as a reward.
When purchasing dog toys, pay attention to small parts that could be swallowed. Some toys are only suitable for small to medium-sized mouth; larger dogs run the risk of swallowing them. Dog toys should be as robust as possible. However, the surface should be designed in such a way that the dog cannot injure itself and cause its gums to bleed. Naturally, dog toys should be made exclusively from non-toxic materials, as the dog puts them in its mouth and produces a lot of saliva while chewing. If your dog likes to fetch or needs a cuddly sleeping companion, plush toys specifically made for dogs are recommended in both cases. Children's plush toys are not suitable for dogs as they are not robust enough.
At Kramer Equestrian, you'll find a wide range of dog toys suitable for both play during walks and for tug-of-war matches with your dog, as well as toys catering to the chewing needs of large and small dogs alike.
