Which bronchial feed can I use to support my horse's respiratory system?
Kramer Equestrian offers a wide range of herbs and supplements for horses with respiratory issues under its own horse feed brand, Original Landmühle. In our online shop, you can purchase supplements that support your horse's airways in various ways: from mucus-dissolving to soothing irritating coughs and anti-inflammatory effects. Since not every horse will eat everything its owner puts in front of it, you can purchase dried respiratory-related herbs from Original Landmühle and mix them into bucket feed or mash, or pour a brewed infusion over the feed. In the latter case, the horse inhales the herbal vapours, which can be beneficial for its airways. For particularly fussy horses, Original Landmühle offers herbal blends as liquids. These can simply be poured over the feed, their good smell generally leads to better feed acceptance in horses.
As a reward or treat in between feeds, you can also support your horse's airways with a herbal lick, which you can also purchase in our online shop.
You can read about other ways to support your horse's airways in our guide "Coughing in Horses: When Your Horse Needs to Inhale".
What herbs can I feed my horse with respiratory issues?
Respiratory problems are among the most common ailments in horses, which can be caused by bacteria, viruses and fungi, and impact the horse's well-being and performance. When a horse has a cough or respiratory problems, treatment should not be delayed for long, as chronic respiratory complaints can quickly develop: acute coughing or an allergy with respiratory problems can develop into chronic obstructive bronchitis (COB) or asthma.
Before you resort to special supplements for your horse's respiratory problems, first have the vet clarify the reasons for the breathing difficulties and check which part of the horse's airways is affected:
- Upper respiratory tract: nose and nostrils, nasal cavities and sinuses, nasopharynx and larynx
- Lower respiratory tract: trachea, lungs, bronchi, alveoli
To keep the germ load as low as possible, forage, bucket feed and bedding should be as dust-free as possible. To achieve this, hay can be watered or, better still, steamed, and wood shavings or straw pellets can be used as bedding.
Finally, a diet tailored to the horse's needs, including vitamin and mineral supplements is the basis for a healthy respiratory system, avoiding overloading the horse's body while counteracting symptoms of nutritional deficiencies.
If a horse already shows symptoms of breathing difficulties, it may be more susceptible to further illnesses, making vitamins beneficial for strengthening the horse's immune system. You can also purchase vitamin-rich supplements for the immune system from the Kramer Equestrian online shop.
Which herbs can help with coughing in horses?
When your horse has a cough, you should first consult your vet for a medical approach to loosen the mucus before it settles in the lungs. Depending on the case, your vet may prescribe a mucus expectorant, antibiotics or even inhalation therapy.
To support the veterinary treatment for your horse's cough, you can feed your horse various herbs - either dried or as an infusion, which you pour over the normal feed and administer lukewarm. Pay attention to the different effects of the herbs to tackle the horses cough at its root:
- Expectorant: Thyme, fennel, aniseed, liquorice root, sage, fenugreek seeds
- Mucous membrane protection: Marshmallow root, Icelandic lichen
- Soothing and antispasmodic: Icelandic lichen, thyme, fennel, ribwort plantain, chamomile
