How do you properly care for a riding jacket and coat?

The care requirements of riding jackets and coats vary from material to material. The respective care instructions can be seen directly on the product label. Failure to observe the care instructions will invalidate any kind of guarantee.

The right care product for your riding clothes

We usually have enough care products for valuable horse accessories such as saddles, bridles or high-quality horse rugs in our tack cabinets. But we rarely think about care products for riding clothes. In order to enjoy your riding clothes and horse accessories for a long time, it is necessary to use the right care products.

Special functional properties such as breathability or waterproofness of your riding clothes and accessories can be impaired if you use household care products and do not follow the care instructions on the labels of the riding clothes. Breeches in particular are subject to high stress and friction when riding. The seat of full seat breeches in particular is subjected to a lot of stress when riding and can quickly become porous or lose its colour and shape without the appropriate care. A special detergent cleans and cares for breeches and other parts of riding clothes whose functional material properties are to be maintained for a long time. The trimmings of riding breeches become soft and supple through individual care. After washing, your breeches will look like new again and smell fresh and pleasant.

Washing and impregnating riding jackets properly

The more often a functional jacket is used for riding, in the stable or even in everyday life without being washed, the more it loses its breathability. The salts and sebum secreted by the body during exertion and through mere contact with the skin are absorbed by the material of the riding jacket and settle in the fibres or membrane pores.

Soft shell, fleece and weather protecting jackets should therefore be washed and, if necessary, re-impregnated at regular intervals or after longer rides such as a trekking tour lasting several days.

Washing the riding jacket

Ideally, residue-free detergent should be used and the use of fabric softener should be avoided. Furthermore, it is best to wash the jacket in cold water (30°C at the most), avoiding spin drying and preferring to rinse it a second time. The jacket should not be dried in the tumble dryer for more than 15 minutes at a low heat level. Since most functional riding jackets are made of synthetic material compositions, they are almost dry after the washing cycle anyway.

Impregnating the riding jacket

The impregnation of the riding jacket should be refreshed from time to time. Spray impregnation is ideal. The jacket should then be put in the dryer for a short time or ironed on a low setting. The resulting heat activates and improves the impregnation performance.

USEFUL TIPS FOR WASHING AND IMPREGNATING RIDING JACKETS

  • As a general rule, first follow the care instructions on the label!
  • Close hook and loop fasteners and zips.
  • Turn soft shell jacket inside out.
  • Always wash with liquid detergent and not with washing powder! Washing powder closes the pores of the membrane.
  • Do not use fabric softener.
  • Rinse the functional clothing thoroughly after washing.
  • Do not impregnate clothing until it is completely dry.

Care products for riding clothes – important for functional fabrics

Nowadays, riding clothes have to meet very high demands when riding. From windproof to breathable to water-repellent, there are riding clothes for every weather condition. Of course, functional riding clothes should retain these properties for a very long time and deliver what they promise when riding in all weather conditions. To ensure that the practical properties such as waterproofness, windproofness or breathability are maintained in the long term, the riding jackets, riding coats or rainwear should be intensively cared for by the rider. For example, water-repellent riding clothes should be impregnated with appropriate care products after every wash or during washing.

Functional textiles such as a functional shirt for riders must not lose their breathability due to care products.
