What do you need for agility?
Agility is a dog sport that involves an obstacle course for dogs. Agility provides excellent fitness training for the dog, stimulating both their mental and physical abilities. Moreover, agility enhances communication between dog and handler. However, it requires a healthy dog capable of meeting the demands of the sport. Not all breeds are suited for this type of activity. Dogs should also not start agility until they are at least 18 months old and have completed their growth.
A first agility course can be built on a small scale in the home or garden using everyday objects. However, if you want to make it professional, get the right equipment for agility. In addition to hurdles tailored to the size of the dog, weave poles, hoops and a tunnel are part of the basic equipment. The tunnel is an excellent starting exercise. To get your dog used to this, you can wait at the other end of the collapsed tunnel with a treat. Once your dog has understood the exercise, the tunnel can be pulled apart step by step. Hurdles made up of poles or hoops can be seen as build-up exercises. Weave poles are ultimately exercises for advanced agility professionals.
Particularly at the beginning, it may be advisable to lead the dog with a lead and collar to make communication more direct.
Of course, the dog should be praised vigorously after each step in the right direction. For this, you can find dog whistles with integrated clickers, dog treats or tube liver sausage in the Kramer Equestrian online shop. To match, you can also buy treat pouches so that you always have all the important utensils at hand. If you want to use something other than a dog treat as a reward, you can also incorporate the dog's favourite toy into training as a reward.
