What does dog grooming include?

  • Coat care
  • Eye care
  • Ear care
  • Dental care
  • Nail care
Good dog grooming includes a grooming routine that varies depending on the breed of dog. Coat care, however, is of great importance for all dogs. Whether long or short fur, it should be brushed regularly. Especially for breeds with long fur, matting can occur quickly. Conditioning coat sprays can make it easier before brushing or can be used preventatively. For shedding in spring and autumn, shedding helpers and brushes are suitable to actively support your dog. In the summer months, you can clip or trim your dog - depending on the breed - to make the heat more bearable for them.
If your dog has floppy ears, they can be prone to mites, inflammation, ingrown hairs, and infections. Check your dog's ears weekly for redness and excessive wax production, and clean them if necessary with a special dog ear cleaner. Some dog breeds are prone to tear staining or dryness, so daily eye care should be performed on these dogs.
For dental care, you can use dog toys that are designed for teeth cleaning. However, from time to time, a toothbrush must also be used to prevent tartar and bad breath.

How much grooming does a dog require?

The intensity of grooming depends on the breed of the dog, and thus also on its breed-specific coat conditions or skin state. Dogs with long fur require more frequent coat care than dogs with short fur. Breeds with long fur may need to be brushed daily.
You shouldn't overdo bathing your dog, but generally only do it when it's really necessary. For example, if your dog has been rolling in something or is infested with parasites. Special dog shampoos are required for this purpose, tailored to their skin and coat to provide long-lasting care. Afterwards, you can put a dog bathrobe on them to speed up the drying process.

How can I care for my dog's paws?

Dog grooming not only involves coat maintenance but also paw care. In addition to regularly checking claws, you can rub a paw balm on the paws. This is particularly important during winter, when it's cold and there's road salt around, to prevent painful cracking of the paws. Dog's paws are normally soft and smooth, but they endure a lot due to various surfaces. Therefore, you should pay regular attention to their care.
At Kramer Equestrian, you can purchase paw protection balm by sugar dog for your dog, which provides plenty of moisture and cares for cracked dog paws. Additionally, we stock animal care oils that are not only suitable for treating wounds and chafing but also for paw care.
Trim any fur growing over the paws as dirt and ice can become trapped in clumps, which can then painfully press between the pads. If clumps have formed, you can remove them with lukewarm water. Afterwards, it is important to dry the dog's paws thoroughly, especially between the toes, as these areas can otherwise become inflamed.

When can I clip my dog's fur?

Dog breeds without undercoats, which don't shed and can develop an excessive amount of fur, or older dogs with circulatory problems, can be clipped in summer. Dogs have only a few sweat glands on their bodies; they regulate their temperature through panting. Less fur due to clipping can provide relief. Additionally, the skin is better ventilated, and the development of skin diseases is prevented. Dogs with undercoats, on the other hand, can be regularly brushed with a shedding helper to remove excess fur. Dogs with rough- or wire coats, however, should be trimmed.
If you regularly clip your dog's coat yourself, it is advisable to purchase your own clippers. At Kramer Equestrian, you can purchase the right clippers for grooming your dog. The battery-operated clippers from Kramer, SHOWMASTER and Aesculap are suitable for outdoor clipping and for smaller dogs, while mains-powered clippers are more suitable for large dogs and lengthy clipping work. The small battery-powered clippers from SHOWMASTER are also very quiet and therefore very comfortable for the dog. Different snap-on combs allow clipping adapted to your dog and its coat.

What can help with ticks on dogs?

On walks, your dog wanders through tall grass and bushes, where it can pick up ticks. As these can transmit infectious diseases such as Lyme disease or anaplasmosis, you should protect your dog from ticks.
The number one protection against ticks is tick repellents. These prevent the tick from feeling comfortable on the dog and searching for a suitable bite site. There are two types of tick repellents: chemical and natural. Chemical tick repellents contain active pharmaceutical ingredients. These can be found, for example, on a tick collar or sold as spot-on treatments. In this case, the required liquid is dripped in small amounts between the dog's shoulder blades.
If a tick has bitten despite precautions, you can easily remove it. There are different models of tools available: Tick hooks grip under the tick at the mouth and slide it out. This eliminates the risk of crushing. In our online shop, you can buy tick hooks in various sizes as a set. With tick tweezers, the tick is grasped with a gripper at the mouthparts and then pulled out. Be particularly careful here, as it is possible for you to squeeze the tick, effectively pushing pathogens into the dog. It is also possible that you could twist the tick out without its head, which can lead to inflammation at the bite site.
