What size rug does an Icelandic horse need?

The size of a horse rug is not necessarily determined by the height of the horse. If one were to base it on the horse's height, the rug might end up being either too large or too small. This method fails to take into account the length of the horse. Particularly with Icelandic horses, measuring via the height can lead to false conclusions. A sporty, elegant Icelandic horse with long legs does not necessarily require a larger rug than one with shorter legs.
Instead, the body length is crucial for determining the correct rug size. To find the right rug size for your Icelandic horse, use a soft tape measure and measure horizontally from the centre of the chest to the end of the rump.
A flexible measuring tape is best suited for this purpose. A ruler is too rigid and therefore inaccurate, and can also lead to fearful reactions from the horse. Alternatively, you can use a lead rope, measuring the length afterwards.
The measurements you've taken can be compared with the rug size charts in the online shop. If your measurement falls between two rug sizes, it's best to round up to the next larger size. In our Kramer Equestrian online shop, you can buy fleece rugs for Icelandic horses with a large chest flap. This allows the horse rug to be perfectly adapted to the different neck shapes of Icelandic horses. Although Icelandic horses can differ by several centimeters in height, their body lengths are almost identical. The average length or rug size of an Icelandic horse is 5'6". An Icelandic horse with a body longer than 5'6" is rare and rather unusual, as they are a fairly compact horse breed. Therefore, you will find rugs for Icelandic horses ranging from 5'0" to 5'6" in our online shop.
You can also purchase sweet itch rug models for Icelandic horses. A wide selection of wind- and waterproof turnout rugs with and without filling can be found in our horse rugs category.

A detailed guide on how to measure the correct size for a horse rug, illustrated with graphics, can be found in our guide on horse rugs here. Here you'll find helpful tips on what to do if the rug doesn't fit despite precise measuring. Especially with Icelandic horses, which have a deep shoulder and broad neck, finding a suitable rug can pose challenges for horse owners. With our guide, we help you find a solution to the fitting problem.
