Which energiser is suitable for which paddock?

The heart of the electric fence is the energiser. Which energiser is right for your paddock depends on various factors:

  • How do the horses behave - do they gallop around a lot, "testing" whether there is enough power in the conductor material?
  • Do the horses have thick or thin coats?
  • How large is the paddock and how long is the electric fence?
  • How dense is the vegetation along the electric fence, which can divert electricity?
The listed criteria determine the necessary output of an energiser, which is given in the form of pulse energy. This is the impact force of the fence, i.e., the maximum energy released upon contact. The higher the pulse energy of the energiser, the easier it is to eliminate vegetation and the stronger the electric shock will be felt. Animals that are easy to keep with thin coats and pastures with little vegetation touching the fence therefore require energisers with low pulse energy. This results in the following conditions for the following energisers:
  • Energisers with low pulse energy (under 1.0 Joules): animals that are easy to herd, short fences with little to no vegetation
  • Energisers with medium pulse energy (up to 5.0 Joules): animals that are difficult to herd, medium-length fences with normal vegetation
  • Energisers with high pulse energy (more than 5.0 Joules): animals that are difficult to herd in very large fields with dense vegetation
Horses usually belong to the category of animals that are easy to herd as they are familiar with electric fences and, in most cases, show respect for them. For horses, energisers with lower pulse energy of less than 1.0 Joules are sufficient.
If horses are kept on a medium-sized to large field, the length of the electric fence also increases, so the output of the energiser must be set higher. In this case, energisers with medium pulse energy up to 5.0 Joules should be considered, as well as for horses with thick winter coats.
From these points, we can make the following recommendations for energisers for horse paddocks:At Kramer Equestrian, you can purchase a suitable energiser for almost any paddock. In addition, you will find batteries, earth stakes, connection cables and warning signs in our electric fence accessories.

What energisers are available?

  • Powerful 230 V energisers with mains connection
  • Portable 9 V energisers
  • Powerful 12 V energisers
  • Solar devices
The classic among energisers are portable energisers powered by a 9 V battery. They are typically used for paddocks located at a greater distance from a mains connection. Compact and easy to transport, they are highly practical. However, they usually have lower impact power, making them suitable only for small paddocks with little to no vegetation. A better option is the 12 V energiser, operated with a rechargeable 12 V battery. Unlike a 9 V dry cell battery that must be disposed of as hazardous waste once depleted, 12 V batteries are more expensive upfront but can be used over an extended period.
If the paddock is near a facility with a 230 V mains connection, a powerful mains-powered energiser can be utilised. Once purchased, these devices can often provide decades of reliable service, making them ideal for permanent paddocks close to stables. At Kramer Equestrian, you can buy energisers with mains connection from CORRAL. These units have high pulse energy, ensuring the electric fence is livestock-safe, provided professional installation and high-quality conductor material are used.
A sustainable investment for fencing is a solar device, which incurs only a one-time purchase cost. Ongoing expenses for new batteries or a mains connection are eliminated. CORRAL's solar devices are optimised for maintenance-free continuous operation, reliably powering the electric fence throughout the summer. Alternatively, they can also be operated with a 12 V battery.
Depending on your specific needs, you can purchase a suitable energiser for your paddock at Kramer Equestrian. Our energisers come with a 3-year warranty.

When ordering 9 V battery energisers, remember to include a 9 V battery. For 12 V battery energisers, add a 12 V gel battery to your cart. Earth stakes for proper earthing can be found in our electric fence accessories. If you opt for a 230 V mains-powered energiser, it's best to order lightning protection as well, which is also available in our electric fence accessories.
To protect passers-by, an electric fence should be marked as such, which is why warning signs indicating electrical voltage are essential. You can find appropriate warning signs in our electric fence accessories.
