What should I consider when buying a winter coat for dogs?
A winter dog coat should have the following features:
- Good fit
- Breathability
- Warmth
- Windproof
- Waterproof (if necessary)
- Protection for sensitive body parts
- Hi-vis reflective details
Different filling levels provide sufficient protection against the cold, depending on the outside temperature and your dog's overall condition. Many winter coats for dogs also feature a cosy fleece lining, which creates a comfortable wearing experience.
The outer material of the dog coat should be at least wind-resistant to prevent the cold from penetrating the coat and causing your dog to catch a chill. Even better would be if the coat is waterproof, so your dog is protected from catching a cold even when caught in a rain shower.
Although it's cold in winter, your dog can still get quite warm under the coat during extended walks or when playing around. Therefore, the winter coat should be made of a breathable material.
During the darker months, hi-vis reflective stripes and motifs on a winter dog coat are important to ensure they are adequately visible when illuminated by other road users.
