Soft shell riding jackets

If you spend a lot of time outdoors and are therefore exposed to different weather conditions, you need functional riding clothes that neither restrict your movement nor are too heavy or even uncomfortable. The stretchable material as well as the ergonomic cut of our soft shell jackets guarantee optimal freedom of movement and best comfort when riding, in the stable and in everyday life. This means that even reactive and movement-intensive procedures, such as those often performed in equestrian sports (for example, jumping, eventing, cross-country or hunting), can be carried out without any problems.

Active riders, regardless of whether they are leisure or competition riders, have to make high demands on their clothing. A good soft shell jacket should be windproof, breathable and, depending on the use, also insulating. The stretchable properties of the materials used offer adequate freedom of movement. The soft, textile feel of the soft shell materials is also pleasant. In contrast to conventional rain jackets, the fabric does not stick to the skin and is quiet when in movement.

Soft shell jackets consist of two to three layers of different fabrics that are bonded together by lamination. The synthetic fibres used are highly breathable, windproof and water-repellent. Hard shell jackets are less breathable in comparison, but can withstand longer rain or snow showers due to their high waterproofness. A combination of soft and hard shell jackets is possible without any problems.

In addition to the classic softshell jackets, which are cut hip-length, there are also softshell coats. These should be ergonomic and cut close to the body so that the wind can be prevented from entering. For a comfortable fit of the jacket or coat while riding, a riding slit must be incorporated. A two-way zip provides additional comfort.

A fleece lining on the jacket provides a soft feel and additional insulation, which means that a soft shell jacket can also be used on mild winter days.

Important details to consider when buying:

1. Arm cuffs: There are many different ways in which the sleeve cuffs of a soft shell jacket can be constructed. Whether they are adjusted by a hook-and-loop fastener, press-stud fastener or elasticated cuff, what they all have in common is that they must be easy to put on and take off, provide a good fit and should not slip after adjustment. It is important that cold bridges at the wrists are prevented and that the cuffs can be fixed firmly over the gloves.

2. Breathability: Since soft shell jackets are windproof and water-repellent or even waterproof, depending on the membrane or coating and construction, breathability should be taken into account. The higher the degree of wind-repellent or windproof properties, the higher the performance of breathability should be. Breathability ensures a comfortable body climate through the effective transfer of body moisture in the form of water vapour molecules to the outside; even during exertion, which is particularly important during work-intensive use such as riding.

3. Collar: As a soft shell jacket acts as a windbreaker, the collar should also be cut in such a way that it reliably protects against cooling draughts. The sensitive neck region should be well enclosed by the (ideally softly lined) collar. The collar protects against both wind and cold, especially if the inside is lined with fluffy soft and heat-insulating fleece. A chin guard in the form of a small cover flap helps against unpleasant friction from the front zip.

4. Fit & design: For equestrian use, the soft shell jacket should not be cut too long or have an additional riding slit. The soft shell jacket should be designed ergonomically and close to the body so that the cooling wind does not find too much surface to attack or even pass through. Many soft shell jackets are also lined with fleece and are also suitable for mild winter days as well as spring and autumn thanks to their heat-insulating properties.

5. Care: Proper care is essential to maintain the life of the soft shell jacket. With regular use, sweat settles into the pores, reducing the breathability of the jacket. It is essential to follow the care instructions on the jacket. When washing the soft shell jacket, use an appropriate detergent and do not use fabric softener. After washing, the jacket can be put in the dryer on the lowest setting. This activates the impregnation of the jacket. A renewal of the impregnation is recommended for regular use.
