How do I find a suitable horse rug for my Western horse?

Every horse has its own stature, which can make choosing a suitable horse rug difficult. Western horses also have a very broad stature and often a deep neck. In addition to the cut, the correct size should be determined first. To find this out, measure the length of the back. Place a tape measure in front of the withers along the spine to the base of the tail. Now compare the measurement result with the rug sizes on the respective product or the size charts. Rug sizes are always given in ten centimetre increments. If in doubt, choose one size larger. In order to accommodate the special features of a Western horse's exterior, you will find horse rugs for Western horses with a deep neckline at Kramer Equestrian.

Furthermore, you should decide for which area of use you would like to buy the rug. You will find rugs for Western horses for every purpose in our online shop. We have wicking rugs, turnout rugs and exercise rugs for Western horses in different colours and made of different materials.

You can read a detailed explanation of how to find the appropriate horse rug for your Western horse in our detailed guide on horse rugs. Here you will also find valuable tips on which rug is suitable for which conformation.

Which horse rugs are suitable for my Western horse?

Western horses differ from other horses of the same size in their conformation. They have a relatively broad chest and a low set neck. Therefore, it may make sense to refrain from using ordinary horse rugs and to choose a rug for Western horses. The basic equipment of the horse includes a wicking rug, which can be put on after training, as a travel rug or for transitional weather. In summer, a fly rug can be useful to provide the horse with relief from pests. If the horse is also in training over the winter season and should not develop so much winter coat or is sensitive to cold, a waterproof or warming rug can be useful.

At Kramer Equestrian you will find, among other things, wicking rugs with an overlapping neck piece, which is designed exactly for the stature of a Western horse. Among the turnout rugs for Western horses you will find turnout rugs with a high neck to provide sufficient protection and to prevent the rain from running under the rug. Some styles are equipped with a fleece lining, which allows for slight perspiration.

If you want to warm up your horse in winter with a rug and protect its the sensitive back, you can put on a fleece exercise rug for Western saddles. Its generous neckline allows enough room for the Western saddle without stretching and wrinkling.

Our range of rugs for Western horses is rounded off by neck covers for perspiration, sleazys to protect mane and coat from dirt before the show, as well as tail bags to prevent hair breakage.
