The flash strap is attached to the noseband and keeps the horse's mouth closed or at least prevent a horse from evading the bit by opening the mouth too far. It can sometimes prevent the horse from putting its tongue over the bit and avoiding pressure in that manner. There should be at least one finger-width between nose and noseband.
