Which riding coat is suitable for winter?

In winter, the layering system is best suited for the stable. It consists of a long-sleeved functional shirt, a light transitional jacket or riding gilet and a riding coat or riding parka. This gives you the opportunity to take something off when you are moving and it gets warm without freezing afterwards.
At temperatures below 10°C, a riding parka is recommended. However, if the temperature drops to freezing, a riding coat is your first choice. Riding coats have a higher thermal performance than a riding jacket or riding parka, but this always depends on the insulating properties of the material. At the same time, it should not be too thick, as a puffy feeling gives the impression of limited freedom of movement. This problem is very well avoided with quilted riding coats, which are filled with padding. This prevents them from puffing up unflatteringly and still provides sufficient warmth.
Because of their length, riding coats should have a riding slit in the back and a two-way front zip to keep you comfortable and warm in the saddle. A collar with artificial fur is impractical and annoying when working in the stable or when riding. When buying your riding coat for winter, make sure that the hood fur is removable. It can be a nice detail for everyday wear. Finally, an adjustable waist is useful so that you can easily adjust the riding coat to your shape. What is the difference between a riding coat and a riding parka?

A riding coat differs from a riding parka mainly by its length. A riding coat is cut longer with a thigh or knee length compared to a parka, which only reaches to the hips. Unlike a riding parka, knee-length riding coats have leg loops that allow you to fasten the coat without slipping. This prevents the thighs from getting cold on winter rides. Parkas do not usually cover the legs, so leg loops are not necessary.
Both styles of jacket have hoods, are thickly lined and can withstand a light rain shower thanks to their water-repellent properties. Spacious, lined pockets not only store small essentials for the rider, but also keep your hands warm should you forget your winter riding gloves.
Like all good riding jackets, riding coats and parkas should have a two-way front zip to increase comfort in the saddle. Depending on the style, both have an internal drawstring that can be used to adjust the waist size.
