Water-Repellent Water-Repellent
If a fabric or product is classified as water-repellent it means it will repel water but is not impervious to it, or put in another way, there is a level of water pressure it can withstand before leaks start to appear. Water-repellent jackets can prevent moisture and short rain showers getting through, as water molecules, due to the impregnation of the outer fabric, evaporate and penetration of moisture is prevented, for example, by wind or extreme pressure on the material. Regular impregnating of the material preserves the water-repellent qualities.
Windproof Windproof
The slightly water-repellent wind protection is achieved primarily through a membrane. The windproof soft shell material provides perfect protection against the dangerous wind chill effect, due to the convective dissipation of body heat, which as a result produces a higher rate of evaporation.
Breathable Breathable
Breathability is not the same as air permeability, but rather the microporous qualilty of the membrane's coating, which allows moisture vapours to escape, keeping the skin dry even during exertion. For this to work, the concentration of moisture vapour (or humidity) on the inside has to be higher than on the outside. In other words, the air on the ourside has to be colder and/or drier than on the inside. Breathable, microporous membranes work effectively to approx. 25°C – higher temperatures lead to a reverse effect.
