What should be in the emergency first-aid kit for horse trekking?

Whereas the motto "less is more" actually applies when packing for a trek, you should equip yourself for all (emergency) cases when putting together a trekking first-aid kit. Whether it's minor injuries, acute illnesses or accidents - on a trek, especially if a large part of it takes place on a route with poor supply facilities, you have to make do with the things in your saddle bags. These include bandages, adhesive tape, disposable gloves, wound spray or iodine soap for disinfecting wounds, wound cream for minor injuries and plasters (for the rider). For blunt injuries and sore muscles after a long day in the saddle, cooling gels are recommended and may be used on both the horse and the rider. One of the most common problems on a horse trek are little stones in the hooves, which can be removed with a white line pick or a Horseman's Knife, which is probably one of the classics of horse trekking accessories due to its many uses. Especially in the warm months, tick bites are not uncommon on a horse trek, which is why a pair of tick tweezers is a must-have. The quicker the tick is removed, the lower the risk of transmission of dangerous pathogens, especially Lyme disease. To protect yourself from other insects, you should also take a suitable insect repellent with you to apply as needed.

Furthermore, you should have the following things with you in case of emergency: Medical boot, foil blanket, electrolytes, thermometer, painkillers for horse & rider and disposable syringes in case medication needs to be administered to the horse. To protect yourself and safeguard the accident scene, you should wear a reflective high-vis vest.

What kind of horse trekking accessories are available?

Since space in the saddle bags is limited when trekking, the same applies to horse trekking accessories and clothing for horse trekkers: the equipment should be limited to the absolute bare essentials. In order to really save space, you should check exactly what you need and what you don't need when buying trekking accessories. However, there are some useful gadgets that make life easier during the trek. For example, in addition to the classic saddle bags for larger items, smaller bags that are worn on the body are the perfect addition to safely stow personal items such as smartphones, money or important documents. So that saddle bags, rain coats etc. can be securely fastened to the saddle, additional packing straps are also a worthwhile purchase for trekkers.

What the classic pocket knife is for outdoor athletes, the Horseman's Knife is for horse trekkers - a multifunctional gadget that combines a knife, hoof pick, mane trimming knife and much more.

When buying trekking accessories, you should also make sure that the equipment can be stored in a space-saving way. Our foldable bucket from TWIN OAKS takes up hardly any space in your saddle bags and can be used for feeding as well as watering and fetching water.

To ensure that the trekking equipment you have purchased will serve you well for several years, you should remember to take proper care of it. In particular, the popular Oilskin rain coats and rain jackets need to be regularly re-waxed to maintain their waterproof function.
