Why do you need fetlock boots?

Unlike boots, fetlock boots are much shorter and cover less of the cannon bone. They do not shield the leg in its entirety like boots, but only protect horses from injuring themselves by striking the legs. Fetlock boots can therefore be a useful addition to the riding equipment for horses with shoes. They do not offer protection on branches or over jumps. In this case, boots for hind legs are more suitable.

How do you put on a fetlock boots correctly?

Fetlock boots do not hold as tightly as boots. Therefore, you should keep a close eye on them to make sure that they are properly fastened and do not slip during movement and thus pose an accident risk. Depending on the type, you can close the fetlock boots with a Velcro fastener or a quick-release fastener. As with boots, the fastener must be placed on the outside and closed towards the back. This prevents the horse from getting caught on the fastener and opening it on its own. If you use fetlock boots with an anatomical shape, so that the lower end is wider, it must also fit the thickest part of the fetlock joint - so that the fetlock is optimally covered.

What are the different types of fetlock boots?

Most fetlock boots are made of a durable plastic shell and are lined with a soft neoprene so that it hugs the leg better. Generally speaking, the fetlock boots do not hold as well as the boots, as they usually only have a Velcro fastener. In order to protect the fetlock joint sufficiently, they are padded on the inside.
Many styles of fetlock boots have an anatomical shape that is adapted to the fetlock joints of the horse. In addition, there are also designs that can even be shaped by hot water and thus adapted to fit the fetlock joint precisely. However, these can then only be used for the respective horse.
In our shop you will find neoprene-lined fetlock boots as well as fetlock boots with soft teddy fleece lining. The wide range of colors allows you to match the fetlock boots to the boots for the front legs.
